Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)
The Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) enables international students who have recently completed an eligible qualification in Australia to live, study and work temporarily after their studies. This visa provides valuable time in Australia to gain work experience, explore career and study pathways, and further your future planning.
Eligibility Criteria
- Be under 35 years of age at the time of application (exceptions apply for certain passport holders, e.g., Hong Kong BNO).
- Hold an eligible visa and be residing in Australia.
- Have held a Student visa (Subclass 500) or another eligible student visa within the last 6 months.
- Have completed an eligible qualification in Australia from a CRICOS-registered course, meeting the “Australian study requirement”.
- Meet English language proficiency requirements (from 7 August 2025, higher scores are required for approved English tests) or hold an exempt passport.
- Meet health insurance, health, and character requirements.
Visa Streams & Duration
The Subclass 485 visa currently has two main streams, and the duration depends on the stream and qualification level:
- Post-Vocational Education Work Stream: For those who completed a trade, diploma, or associate degree linked to an occupation on an approved skilled list. You can typically stay in Australia for up to 18 months.

Post-Higher Education Work Stream: For graduates of bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees.
Duration depends on qualification — for example:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s by coursework: up to 2 years
- Master’s by research or PhD: up to 3 years
